Have Your Kids Went Down ‘The Slide’ This Summer?

How is everybody? Have the kids been driving you bonkers yet since they are out of school? Well, a couple of my kids haven’t finished their school work yet but hopefully they will be completely finished by Friday. As I was going through the rest of their assignments I came across a couple of links that I thought I’d share.

As many of you know I homeschool my kiddos and we like to use Easy Peasy All In One Homeschool. Most everything is FREE and so useful. They are always adding new things to the site as well and I am ever so thankful for them. My kids really love the site and all of the different resources that they provide. They have learned a lot of different subjects and various subject matter. However a lot of times our kids get so busy playing that they forget, what they’ve worked so hard to learn during the previous year, over the short summer. This can cause for a lot of trouble at the beginning of the new school year.  Continue reading Have Your Kids Went Down ‘The Slide’ This Summer?

Dealing With Bug Bites

It’s that time of year when we all like to be outdoors. The weather is nice, well most of the time, but the bugs are not. Here we’ve had quite a bit of rain so it’s been a struggle dealing with mosquitoes and yellow flies too.

These things really itch when they bite so we really like to use our ‘Stop The Itch Cream’. It really does help to soothe the skin and stop that annoying itch. I’ve just made up a new batch and you can follow this link for the recipe.

My favorite place for buying oils has been Simply Earth. (This is an affiliate link.) They also have a monthly subscription box where you can get recipes and all the ingredients you need for them delivered right to your door. It’s so easy!

It’s Not Just Another Night

I wrote this several months ago even though it only posted today. This was written before the recent loss of famous people like Kate Spade and Anthony Bourdain. It is so important for us to take the time to check on one another and to make sure those around us know just how important they are to us.

In today’s day and age it is sometimes confusing as to how we can communicate our feelings without crossing or blurring relationship lines. I don’t have a ‘one size fits all’ answer for that as every relationship and every individual are different and require a different approach. But when it all boils down to it just do what feels most comfortable to you. This post was an example of how I felt comfortable in sharing this.

I have a friend that doesn’t seem to know just how important he has been to me. I was talking to him a while back and wished him a ‘Good Night’ like I normally do. He replied that ‘It is just another night’. That bothered me for some reason.

Yes, maybe it was just another night, but it was special in its own way. It was another end of a day, a day to add to the time we have been friends.

When we met I was going through a really rough time. He didn’t know that at the time but I was really sad and kind of lost in a way. I had thought God was leading me down one path only to have the path bulldozed, without warning, in front of me with no detour ahead. I was at a dead end in some ways.

We just happened to meet and I really didn’t think we’d ever become friends. God has way of changing our thinking and making things happen.

We would make plans to go out or do something. The plans never happened. We would try again only to have something else come up.

Then I’d think to myself that it was probably for the best. I mean his ‘wyd’s’ were driving me nuts anyways… lol. (I had to get someone to translate a lot of his abbreviations for me to start with.)

Then he’d text me and everything would be OK. We talked a lot. Sometimes he would send me a text when I least expected it and it would totally catch me off guard. One time he sent me an early morning text, which was very out of character for him, that I credit for saving my family and me from a potential house fire.

Over the months I learned a lot about him. I began to see him differently. When it seemed like we were getting close he would just pull away and I didn’t understand.

There would be days and even weeks we didn’t talk at all. Then I would start to think about how much I enjoyed our friendship. I tried to tell him but sometimes it just didn’t come out right.

We went for a bit without speaking or texting. I just assumed he had met someone and I continued on with my normal activities. After all I wanted him to be happy and he had said he wanted the same for me.

Then I met someone. When we talked again and I gave him my good news he didn’t react the way I’d expected. I’d hurt his feelings without meaning too. I really didn’t think we would ever talk again. But I was wrong again.

Our paths kept crossing in crazy and completely unexpected ways. We start texting and catching up and it feels like it did. We can talk about most anything and he can cheer me up with the craziest things.

So Pepe,

I don’t know what plans God has in store for you but I know they will be great! I know he sees everything you do and he sees everything you don’t. He sees the little things you do as well as the big ones. He is working on something very special for you, I can feel it!

I want you to know that it’s not just another night or just another day. Today is a special day because you are a special, one of a kind friend! Don’t shortchange yourself because you are a great friend! Anyone who can call you a friend is very blessed and that includes myself!

If you read this I want to thank you for being my friend through the good and the bad! I’m always here if you need to talk, no matter if it’s about the weather or the one who got away (girl or fish).

Your friend,

Susie

Do you have a friend like this? Maybe someone who you haven’t kept in touch and would like to let them know that you still think about them? Go ahead and let them know how much they mean to you. It might just make their day a little extra special.

Midweek Update June 12,2018: Allergies, Blueberries, and Cornhole Boards

Quite an assortment of topics for this update. I’m sure I will add in a few others as we go along too.

Allergies

First on the list is the allergies. I try to be preventive and I spray the beds every morning with an essential oil concoction that contains Lavender. This usually helps but I didn’t spray when I made the beds yesterday and the grass was mowed in the afternoon.

I took a trip to the garden after the mowing and now I’m dealing with major allergies. (Last night’s fresh tomato sandwich was so good though.) I love the outdoors but they don’t love me. I seem to also have an allergy to bug bites, especially mosquitoes, after I was attacked by a swarm of mosquitoes last Fall.

Luckily the kids aren’t as bad as I am. Joey gets the sneezes every now and then. I’ve found that the generic Zyrtec helps us both when the Lavender isn’t enough.

Almost Mid Year Progress

Hey y’all,  guess what day it is… just kidding! It is a Wednesday here and that means the middle of our week. It is June also so we are not quite but almost halfway through 2018! Crazy, right? Where has time gone? I am sitting here enjoying a rare quiet moment as the kids are still sleeping. So many things are going through my head and there is so much to do. I’ve got some Chocolate Chip Muffins in the oven for breakfast, a cup of coffee, and a couple of delicious cookies from last night sitting here with me.

I’ve spent the last few minutes trying to figure out why my mouse wasn’t working. It was turned on and the red light kept coming on but my laptop wasn’t responding at all. Hmmmm….. then I remembered that I had put the little do-hickey thingamabog, you know the USB thingy, into my old laptop when I was working on the newsletter for our square dance clubs… duh! Silly me, but now it’s where it needs to be and all is good.

Silver Fox Squares: June 2018 Update

Just a little bit about what we’ve been up to this past month!

The Silver Stars have had many great visitors from area clubs like the Dixie Dancers in Lake City and the Salty Bobbers in Steinhatchee. On May 12th we also had local callers and a cuer in the hall along with caller, Sheila Terhune, from Indiana. Then on May 26th they held a Memorial Dance where some of the dancers got together to earn a Mummy Dangle by wrapping the caller in toilet paper and festive red and blue streamers. The Salty Bobbers also held a banner raid and took the club banner back home with them.

Our Silver Fox Squares in Starke have been DARK and will continue to…

Living Room Kleaning Missions: Weekly Wrap Up

Oh my what a week! We definitely didn’t make as much progress as I had thought we would but that’s ok. Our house and family has benefited from what we have done and it shows.

If you missed the mid week progress you can check it out here.

This post does contain a lot of screen shots from Pinterest. Feel free to check out my boards to find the links to these posts. There may also be a few affiliate links sprinkled throughout the post as well.

Day 3

Part of the lack of progress is my pure lack of motivation/laziness. Not to mention my recent obsession with Pinterest. If you follow me then you know what I’m talking about. So many ideas!

I am also a planner. I like to know what I’m doing, when I’m doing it, and how I’m doing it. When you have limited space (with a lot of stuff) it’s especially important when to think things through before rearranging and moving things around.

I’ve been obsessed with a couple of projects and I have a notebook full of ideas and sketches. A big part of the day was spent trying to figure out how to re-purpose some items we currently have into a new area. I’m hoping to be posting about this project in a few weeks. Living Room Kleaning Missions: Midweek Progress

This post does contain some affiliate links to products that we use in our own home. These links do not affect your cost in any way but may possibly provide a small kickback for my family.

So this week we have finally moved on to our Living Room which for us is the Main Room of this little cabin which also serves as the Dining Room, Home School Area, and temporarily holds a bunk bed set for now. A lot goes on in this room so just thinking about tackling it was a bit daunting. I broke it down into sections and decided to take it one wall/partial wall at a time.

The FlyLady missions for the week were to do a Hot Spot Drill, to get rid of anything that doesn’t belong in this area, do a detailed vacuuming session which includes the baseboards and under the furniture, a detailed dusting of pictures and decorative items, and then on Friday it was for a multi room mission to tackle Hot Spots in the Dining Room, Entrance, and Porch Areas. I planned to a do a more detailed cleaning but these would have been a good starting point if I was just doing my regular housecleaning.

Day 1

The first wall I worked on was the wall where the couch sits. We moved the couch away from the wall and the kids worked on gathering up their toys and such that had ended up underneath there. I took down all the pictures on this wall while the girls cleaned the lamps and end tables. (Right now we have a filing cabinet and a night stand as end tables because my regular tables don’t fit there.)

I did measure again to see if there was any way to get the end tables in here but not yet. Currently they are pushed together and being used as the coffee table while the coffee table is out in the storage area on the porch. I really do miss my coffee table as it has storage where we have always previously stored all of our board games. I will be so happy when we can finally get everything situated to bring it into this room. Small steps will make it happen.

Finding My Motivation When The Pep Talks Don’t Work

It’s another semi gloomy day here. Yesterday I wrote a post about what we had accomplished last week. While I was happy with what we had accomplished I was hoping that we had been able to get more done but I just didn’t have the gumption to do anything more over the weekend.

Then comes this morning. I laid in bed trying to find some motivation but it just wasn’t coming. I really felt pretty lazy today and the kids did too so I let them sleep in a bit. I crawled back in bed after getting dressed which didn’t help my motivation at all.

Finally after trying to give myself some pep talks about how much better I’d feel once I got a couple things done I managed to roll out of bed and head to the kitchen. I made a cup of coffee and fixed everyone some French Toast for breakfast.

Then it was off to start on chores. I really didn’t feel like doing any of those either. I pulled out my phone and started checking off my tasks on my FlyLady app.

One of my first tasks was to do my morning reading. I’m not sure where or when I got this book but it has been very helpful for various situations that I have dealt with lately.

Then it was off to the bedroom to fix the bed and gather the dirty laundry that had accumulated over the weekend while I was sick. Immediately I felt defeated because of how my room looked.

Even though I had spent the better part of last week in this room it really didn’t look like it this morning. I spent about 10 minutes and had the room tidied back up and put away EVERYTHING that didn’t belong, including the vacuum cleaner.

This past month’s missions have been a big effort to get all like items together in the same area. This goal is still a work in progress but it is coming along and we are seeing some great results. Just realizing this was a bit of a motivator to get me up and going.

With a load of laundry in the wash I set about getting to the other items on the list like cleaning the bathroom. Boy did it need a good cleaning! I also filled the oil diffusers and that in itself improved a lot. By this time it was almost time for lunch which was some leftover hamburgers and pasta salad from yesterday.

I went ahead and put some chicken thighs and Italian dressing in the crockpot for dinner later. I pulled out a box of Success Quinoa I had received as a trial and pulled out some frozen rolls so they could rise. With dinner taken care of I set about taking care of some of the weekly and monthly tasks on my list like wiping out the fridge and microwave and then cleaning the AC filters.

My morning was gone and my list still had quite a bit of tasks to complete so I finished the most important ones and then off to tackle a couple of missions in the Main Room.

I still wasn’t completely motivated to tackle any new missions though so I took a quick break. The kids and I stepped out to the porch to feed the fish. We really do enjoy watching the fish and the turtles come up to nibble on the bread. After a few minutes I headed out to the wash shed to swap a load of laundry and then the rain started again.

Just a quick break was what I needed before starting in the Main Room.Instead of looking at the whole room, which serves as a living room/dining room/home school area/and more, I am going to break it down into smaller sections like I did with the kitchen. Hopefully that will help me get this room organized and more functional for us.

I also know that our upcoming project will help out with the way this room functions as well so just thinking about that does give me a little bit of the motivation I am so desperately needing. Check back in later this week for a review of the progress we’ve made and some of the activities we’ve done this week.

Praying you all have a blessed week!

My self pep talks may not have worked as well as I’d hoped but I did get up and get started. I really don’t know why this decluttering/cleaning has been so hard for me lately but I’m determined to get it done.

If something just doesn’t seem to motivate you then find a way to make it easier. Once you get started then you’ll feel better about finishing the task at hand.

Bedroom Kleaning Missions and More Rain

Hey y’all! It’s me again. I’m a little late getting this out, as usual here lately.

Last week was mostly spent organizing the Master Bedroom. One day’s mission was to clean out from under the bed. This was a little scary as I have quite a bit stored under there.

Before I could start under the bed I had to replace the light bulb in the ceiling fan. I wanted to have plenty of light just in case there were any sneaky critters hiding under there. After finding a snake at the door that leads out to the dock in this room I wouldn’t have been surprised to have found one under there.

This wasn’t an easy task as I couldn’t reach it very easily. My solution is not one I recommend but it did the job.

Cabin Fever

WARNING: This post is probably one of my whiniest, depressing, and just gloomy posts ever!

I think we’ve all heard of Cabin Fever but maybe you haven’t really ever had to deal with it. I know the term gets thrown around here and there but actually experiencing it is no fun at all.  It is described as:

cab·in fe·ver

noun

NORTH AMERICANinformal
noun: cabin fever
  1. irritability, listlessness, and similar symptoms resulting from long confinement or isolation indoors during the winter.

Well, this past week and weekend I have had a horrible case of it even though winter has passed. (I’ve also come down with a bit of a cold after taking the boys to the doctor and I haven’t felt very well.) It has been raining, raining, and raining like crazy and we’ve been stuck in the house quite a bit.

Then when we do go out we are usually headed to a dance and dodging mud puddles with dance shoes and crinolines on is not a whole lot of fun.  (I don’t really know why it has been so bad right now as I’ve spent many a week or more snowed in when we lived up north and I don’t ever remember dealing with Cabin Fever to this extreme.)
