I wrote the other day about how we’ve been doing some remote learning of sorts. I also mentioned that I had ordered some new curriculum and I think I’ve figured out how to keep it organized… I’ll just post the assignments and links to the videos I want the kiddos to watch on our blog like I did with some of our other studies. Maybe someone else will find this helpful in their homeschool. I do plan on getting those Little House on the Prairie lessons finished up in the future.
I’m pretty sure we’ll be using ‘Story of the World, Vol. 1 ‘ for history and ‘Science in the Beginning‘ for science. Part of the reason for using these is that I already have them. Another part is that I’m just trying to keep it simple and use this for all the kids but I will have other assignments for the older kiddos to do as well as throwing in some youtube videos and such. **I will provide links to products that we use whenever I can. Please know that these links may be affiliate links where we would get an itty bitty kickback simply for referring you but it won’t cost you a penny extra. I encourage you to check for used books on Amazon and/or eBay to save money, whenever possible.
We will also be using the ‘All About Reading Books‘ for the younger kids while the older kids will probably be using some online textbooks from Complete Curriculum. I bought these k-12 textbooks several years ago in a homeschool bundle but have only used them a few times. I also plan to use some Daily Trait Writing activites as well as Skill Sharpeners and whichever Thinking Skills book I have at home already.
For math the older kids will be using the online textbooks and the younger kiddos will start off using Math-U-See as I already have those at home. If these are too difficult for someone to help them with I will come up with something else or maybe buy them some math workbooks to use. This is one of those things that I’ll have to work on as we go through the next several months.
For art we will be using some videos I find on YouTube as well as this step by step drawing book here. We’ve also got a slew of games, books, and other activites to throw in with our lessons to keep things interesting. I’m going to try to keep it as simple as I can… well, might simple might not be as simple as others would be but I like to give them a variety of activities presented in different ways to encourage each one’s learning style.
I’m also working on making a daily schedule for the kiddos because they’ve been running a bit wild while I’ve been gone. I made a schedule for myself and Shyanne here at the hospital because between keeping up with stuff at the house and stuff that needs completed everyday here my brain was getting a bit frazzled. I also want to make sure that I’m keeping her routines as close to ‘normal’ as possible so there isn’t a big issue when we transition home… hopefully sometime next week.
When we get home I’d like to try to make up a few freezer meals as well as getting some other things taken care of to make it easier for anyone coming to help. There have been times where I was so organized that ANYONE could walk in and take over with no torubles at all… I really don’t think I’ll be able to that right now but everything I can do to help will make me feel so much better.
I may add in some other things as I start to get this year’s studies together as I have some bundles I’ve purchased throughout the years and I have a TON of resources at home already. I hadn’t really planned on buying anything new this year but they just aren’t organized or readily accessible. I was planning on getting another shed at the beginning of the month so we could move everything over from the little house storage and get it organized. I was also going to box up and store what we aren’t using in the house while I was working on organizing but that is something that will just have to wait a bit longer.
Some people have asked if I will just send the kiddos to public school. Nope, I don’t plan on doing that for a number of reasons. We really need the kids to stay healthy right now so that we don’t stress Shyanne’s comprimised immune system. Also a couple of the kiddos have been diagnosed with ADHD and behavioral issues which we are able to manage without medication at home. In the past, they have needed medications to be able to go to school and that’s not really something I want to do again. Then there would be the inevitable times that someone would need to go pick up the kids because someone was sick or misbehaving and right now I just don’t have the energy to be juggling all of that. When things have settled down we may revisit this conversation but for now we’ll just keep going like we have been for the past few years.
Well, its getting close to dinner time here and Food Service will need this table to put our tray on so I guess I better finish up. We thank you all so very much for your continued support and prayers during this journey.
