Colds, a collapsed well, and some deep cleaning

It’s New Year’s Eve and I, along with many others, will be glad to be putting 2020 behind me. It was a rough year in so many ways. We did have quite a few good things that came from it, like our beautiful baby girl, but it seemed like something new and even more ominous was lurking behind every corner.

Such a cutie!

This week has been no exception to the 2020 rule. It feels like we haven’t even had a chance to ‘recover’ from Christmas before being slammed with one thing after another this week… that’s pretty much how this whole year as felt though and I am thoroughly exhausted.

The kiddos have picked up a cold somehow and have been happily spreading it amongst each other and the baby seems to have a touch of it now which prompted me to call the pediatrician this morning while out for my Walmart Grocery Pickup**. You’d think after 9 kiddos I wouldn’t be such a worry wart but this little girl has broken all the rules and has me on pins and needles quite a bit. She has proven to be quite the little warrior princess though and already has 4 surgeries, including open heart surgery, under her little belt at 5 1/2 months old!

The pediatrician assured me that everything sounded like a common cold and gave me the guidelines that would warrant an ER visit but little miss seems to be feeling much better this evening. I did however make sure to pick up some more Elderberry gummies** and got everyone started on them again. We had quit taking them earlier in the year when there were a few reports that had mentioned that Elderberry could possibly make COVID symptoms worse but we try our best to social distance and if anyone tests positive we will discontinue them until everyone is recovered.

This house ownership thing has really been quite hard on us this year and the house issues still continue as part of our well collapsed on Sunday. Our water was milky colored and had a fine gray silt in it… yuck! After contacting the well company, we have been running a water hose from the pump off/on for the past few days and I think we finally have clean water again.

Thankfully we had our Berkey water filtration system** that truly held up to the test and provided us with plenty of clean water for drinking and cooking. You can read more about when/why we got our Berkey here , here, or here.

Can you tell which one is clean?

I gave it a deep clean a bit ago and I was amazed at how much gunk it has been removing from our water! You can see the three dirty filters and the one I had cleaned off a bit… so NASTY!! I just placed an order for some new filters as well because we don’t ever want to be without our BERKEY!

Unfortunately though the house doesn’t have any kind of filtration system so we had lines and filters clogged EVERYWHERE. Today has been a big day of deep cleaning to get everything up and running properly. I started with the washer and had to disconnect the supply hoses so I could pull out the filters and give it a good cleaning.

Next on my list was the toilets… I had already purchased a couple of new tank kits** for the toilets as the old ones were clogged with the fine silt and using a bucket of water to flush the toilets was getting old really quickly. I replaced the tank kits and cleaned out the tanks really well to remove as much silt/iron as I could and they are working so much better now. Mr. Awesome did end up replacing one of the shut off valves as well as it was completely clogged with silt and wouldn’t allow any water to pass through it at all.

After fixing the toilets I removed all of the faucet aerators? and screens (I think thats what they are called.) and gave them a good cleaning and then I removed the shower head and gave it a good cleaning so that it works so much better… I am ready for a nice shower that doesn’t leave me feeling like I just bathed in the creek!

It was pretty crazy that I was cleaning with my Norwex rags and got a call to reactivate my account… I did that this evening as I’ve really been thinking about getting some new supplies and just haven’t had the chance.

Whew! I am beat and ready for bed but I still need to put some rice on to go with our Crockpot Taco Soup for dinner. I’ve done a few crockpot meals this week and with everything else that has been going on it’s been really nice to not have to worry about dinner after a hectic day.

Yesterday was also a bit crazy as I dealt with our house feeling like it was falling apart… did I mention that the washer had flooded the laundry room yesterday??? After cleaning up the mess I managed to get my new calendars planned out… I got this one** and this one from Amazon and I am in love with them! I also got this lovely planner** while I was at the hospital for Shyanne’s open heart surgery.

The bigger calendar is for our ‘command center’ in the kitchen which is still a work in progress, as are so many things arond the house right now. The smaller one is for the wall above Shyanne’s changing table so I can keep notes and appointments where the nurse can easily see them as well as being a nice reminder for myself. The smaller calendar also has Bible verses that I thought could me a little bit of nice inspiration for those hard days. The planner fits in the diaper bag and goes with me with to all of our many appointments.

It took me about an hour or so to get all of the appointments, birthdays, anniversaries, and such written on all three calendars but the time was well worth it. I also went ahead and marked the Full Moons and New Moons as we know that those can affect some of our kiddos here and it never hurts to be prepared for them! I also try to keep everything updated on our Cozi calendar** as Mr. Awesome and I can both access it from our phones.

Anyways, I just thought I’d give you guys a little update/sneak peek into what we’ve been up to as I try my best to get back to blogging. We also wanted to wish you all a very Happy New Year! We are looking forward to seeing what 2021 has in store for us and can’t wait to see what blessings are in store for us in the new year!
