How To Blog With A Houseful Of Kids

You might be thinking about starting your own blog but wondering if it is even possible, especially if you have a houseful of kiddos running underfoot like I do! I can’t guarantee your success but I can give you a few helpful tips that I’ve learned along the way.

After reading over the finished post I realized that most of the techniques could be used to accomplish a variety of tasks throughout your day like cleaning, hobbies, or just about anything you set your mind to do.

Find your passion

My blog originally began as a simple way to help keep long-distance family members informed of our life changes as we had just adopted three little ones, and then miraculously had two more. Our family of four more than doubled in a span of 3-4 years! We also had three kids go into the armed services during that time.

Then I realized that I could also use it to keep a record of our family’s favorite recipes as I was always getting requests for recipes and such, especially after my older kiddoes started moving away from home. Our blog became a tool that I could use to help me stay organized with all of the crazy stuff that was is going on in our lives.

The important thing is that you blog about something that you are passionate about, your niche. For me, that is my family and lately, it has been our journey to getting rid of chemicals and toxins in our lives so that we can improve the quality of our lives.

Don’t blog about computers if you have no interest in computers but if you love to cook you could blog about some of your family’s favorite recipes. Just try to focus on one main topic even though it can be so hard to choose just one… trust me, I know.

Make a list of ideas

Make a list of blog ideas that you think you might want to write about. Try to brainstorm and come up with some ideas that you are knowledgable about and then narrow them down to the ones you are truly passionate about.

Make a list of topics/areas that you would like to become more skilled at as well as the ones you feel experienced in. You can share your learning experience with others as you widen your areas of expertise. You may want to learn more about meal planning or living a more natural lifestyle, write them down and find a course to learn more. Do it now while you are thinking about it!

Take a blog course

You might not think you need it but you may find it very helpful. I know I have learned a lot from some of the free courses that I’ve taken over the past couple of years. You could try starting with this course HERE.**

There are actually courses for just about anything that you want to learn. You can also find a wide variety of ‘How To’ videos and tutorials on various subjects. Don’t let the fact that you ‘don’t know how to do something’ stop you from learning new skills. If there are skills that you listed on your ‘Ideas List’ that you want to learn more about or that you don’t feel experienced in then work on them.

Set your goals

You want to set some goals for writing posts and promoting them as well. You may want to start small with a goal of 1 or 2 new posts a week. You can then work on creating more topics to post about like Motivational Mondays, Tuesday Tips, Wacky Wednesdays, Throwback Thursdays, Frugal Fridays, etc.

Goal setting is important in every area of our lives, even with housekeeping and parenting. Without goals, we may find ourselves wandering aimlessly without a purpose and end up wishing we had done things later. Take time now and write down some short term and long term goals for various areas other than your blogging dreams.

You may also find it best to dedicate certain days of the week to specific areas like Sunday: rest/family time. Mondays: meal planning, Tuesdays: blogging, Wednesdays: errands/grocery shopping, Thursdays: tackle the To-Do list or start a course, Fridays: fun activities (game night, movie night, date night, etc.), Saturdays: Yard work, personal time. Maybe you need to dedicate a certain day of the month for specific activities as well. Ex: 2nd Saturday of the month: cleaning out/washing vehicles or 3rd Sunday of the month: Family Dinners.) Be creative and do what works for your family.

Be intentional with your time

Plan your workday. I keep a To-Do list for the important things that need to be taken care of as far as promoting my posts, creating new Pins, emails, responding to social media messages, and other tasks that need to be done on a daily basis.

Maybe you are a slow typer and you just don’t have the time to sit and type out post after post. I have found that voice to text and Google docs with the text option work well if I am trying to multitask. I can then copy the work over to a blog post and add headers and photos as needed.

Don’t try to do too much at once! Trust me, you can’t do it all.

I know these are all pretty much no-brainers but I haven’t said how to do this when you have kids running around and distracting you all day long. I find that I need to schedule times for different activities or they just don’t get done.

If you set a time to work on your blog then you should work on your blog. You also need to make sure to include time to spend with family, keep up the house, and other tasks that must be completed to keep your family running smoothly.

I have found that meal planning and freezer cooking really help out here in our house. If I know I am going to have a busy day (like the days when we have square dances) I will use a freezer meal to get dinner going earlier in the day so I can cross that off my daily To-Do list. **

Give the kids away

You could just give the kids away… at least for an hour or two. Maybe they could spend a bit of time with their grandparents or trusted friends. This doesn’t usually happen at my house band if it did I might be more inclined to take a nap than to blog… or clean house.

If your kids go to daycare, school, or are away at times then you should use your time wisely. I know that if I have a planned schedule or To-Do list I find that I can be more productive. 

Use screen time wisely

I will occasionally put on some educational videos for them to watch while I work. I do caution that you should use the screen time wisely and be careful not to let the electronics become babysitters.

We do have tablets that our kids can use if they have earned the privilege… hopefully, I’ll get a chance to post about our checks and tallies system at a later date but maybe you can use a reward system to help motivate your kiddos to behave.

You might also want to check out Educational Games for a list of some of the games that we use to keep our kids occupied. You may also want to try audiobooks as an alternative from screen time… my kids really love the Live The Adventures series from Heirloom Audio. Youtube also has several different book series as well, we use the Little House on the Prairie series for our homeschool right now. **

Let the kids play

Sounds kind of simple, right? Many times we try to plan out what the kids should be doing and when they should be doing it. Or maybe we are constantly refereeing them to prevent squabbles. In reality, they may just need to learn to play by themselves.

I keep my kids withing sight but they have a lot of different items they can play with like Lincoln Logs, Legos, coloring books and crayons… lots of toys that are not electronic. We also have a huge collection of board games and puzzles for all ages. Always make sure to keep the little pieces out of reach of the little ones. **

When my kiddos were really small I made up a bunch of ‘Busy Boxes‘ to keep them occupied. I would also let them play wherever I was at and they had great fun with the simplest of items… think very simple: plastic bowls, pots, and wooden spoons!

Go to bed late

If your kids are young you can set them an ‘early’ bedtime and try to stay up for an hour or so to work while the house is quiet. I know for me this doesn’t usually work well as I have a BIG kid who wants my attention after the kiddos are settled. I am also usually ready for bed soon after the kids go to sleep.

It is important to make time for relationships and ‘schedule’ time for fun. Try having a date night at least once a month to stay connected. When there is a strain in a relationship it causes stress which can cause a variety of other issues. I find that if we are having any issues I become truly unmotivated to do much of anything until the air is clear.

Get up early

Maybe you are not a night owl so it might be better to try to get up earlier than everyone else. I set my alarm for an hour or two before the kids get up so that I can have a little quiet time before the crazy starts.

This seems to be the most productive time for me. I like to fix a cup of Dandy Morning Coffee to sip on as I work.

In our house, we have a rule that the kids can not come out of their rooms, except to go to the bathroom or for emergencies, until the kitchen light is on. This works out pretty well for me to be able to get a little bit of work done first thing in the morning when the house is relatively quiet… lol.

Take breaks

It is very important to take frequent breaks and spend a few minutes with your kiddos. Share a special snack with them and make sure they know that you haven’t forgotten about them at all. I have found that snacks help to keep the crazies away when it comes to my brood!

It is very important to get up and walk around to prevent any strains or injuries too… yes, sitting at a computer for hours at a time can be dangerous! Maybe find a fun stretching routine that you can all do together.

Go ahead, take a few breaks and get down on the floor and help them build a skyscraper from legos or put together a puzzle. It just might help get your creative juices flowing too!

Plan a getaway

Maybe you have a lot of work to do and there are too many distractions in your home. Ask your husband, friend, or family to watch the kiddos while you take a break and head to the library or local internet cafe so that you can work in peace for a bit.

Also, make sure to plan a few family getaways to help everyone feel connected. Oftentimes we can get so engrossed in our projects that we don’t realize how much we have been ‘neglecting’ those around us. So make sure to schedule some fun time for everyone!

Most importantly you need to have fun and give yourself some grace. I know how hard it can be to focus and feel accomplished but try to take a step back and see the whole picture. Do you want your kids to remember a Momma who was constantly on the computer and never had time to play with them? Or would you rather they remember the fun they had with you?
