This past weekend I was helping to sort out some sheds with Mr. Awesome. There were a ton of items with a ton of memories attached. However some things were decided to go for Yard Sale items and a few were given to me like this photo album…
How often do we take photos and print them out anymore? Do you still clip newspaper articles to keep? I know that I many things saved in my Bible but nothing recent. I also have a few photo albums from when my older kids were little but over the past 10 years or so I haven’t had that many photos to keep.
After finding this lost post I decided that this was something I was going to change, today. The world is so digital now that it is many times easier to keep the photos on your phone or computer. What happens if you don’t have them backed up on something and your phone is lost or destroyed? That is something I don’t even want to think about.
This past year I had some photos and other important items get destroyed because they had been improperly stored. It wasn’t intentional as the place they were stored was intended to be temporary but then LIFE happened and they never got relocated. I’ve shed my tears over those precious items but I am determined not to let that happen again.
There are a variety of ways to keep your memories safe and I will be using a few different methods for different reasons. One way is to keep printed photos. My mom-mom had shoeboxes full of pictures and I enjoyed sitting there looking back on those memories some of which I had completely forgotten about until I saw the pictures.
She also had some of our handmade items that we had given to her. This was a special feeling to know that she had kept them safe all these years. I do have several boxes full of things like these that my little ones have made for me but I just don’t have that many pictures at all.

I plan to buy a few photo albums to start keeping up with on a regular basis. I really like these and these that I found on Amazon. I also plan to back up some of our photos on CDs and store them in our firebox just in case of emergencies. I have spoken to so many people who have had disasters like fires and floods and they all regretted not having their photos backed up and preserved.
I have also always wanted to try my hand at scrapbooking but never seemed to have the time for it. Maybe this is something I will find time for this year? It’s not really on the top of my priorities but it is something I will add to my To-Do list.
I do however like putting together little videos and maybe I can make a few from some of the photos that we never printed out. I think this idea saved onto some CDs and/or a small scrapbook would make great gifts for grandparents… hmmm… that’s got me thinking. 🙂
Then there are also lots of digital products and services out there for storing and displaying our precious memories. These digital photo frames would also be really great gifts that could be continually updated. I think this would also be a great way for us to display photos here in our little house is limited on wall space.
I have a few ‘traditonal’ collage style frames but no place to hang them. I also have a few photos on this ‘family tree’ display that was given to me several years ago. I really do love this even though I need to try to find a few more small frames to add my son-in-law and daughter-in-law to this.
This week I am going to make sure to pull out those hard-to-reach photo albums and put them somewhere where I can access them. I am also going to research a few more ideas on Amazon and devote a little bit of time to organizing some of my photos as I get them uploaded to my laptop.
I may also try to save a little money for some more photo paper, or check into the photo printing at Walmart, so that we can start a few photo albums. My two older girls had photo albums when they were younger and this is definitely something that I think we could do as a family and it would help teach my kiddos how to make sure that they keep their memories safe.
I may even let them play around with some of the video editing apps that we have on the tablets so that they can learn how to use them. This would come in handy later on when I need help with videos for other activities too. In addition to these ideas I may invest in one of these gadgets to back up the pictures on my phone and computer.
As for the other items and little doo dads I already have a variety of pretty boxes that I have collected over the years and I don’t really have an organization system set up for them. I just fill a box until its full and then work on the next one. I guess everything will be kinda sorta organized by years as long as I continue with this method.
Do you still have traditional photo albums? What is your favorite method of storing and/or organzing your photos and memories?
