Don’t Forget This Back to School Essential!

This is one part of the back to school adventure I do not miss at all. It never failed that when my kiddos went back to school the girls would eventually come home with those dreaded head lice. EWWW! I would always get a bit paranoid when one of them would start to scratch their head for any reason.

I am gonna spare everyone the description of what head lice are and how they infest anyone around them because I really hate thinking about them.

I can vividly remember many a time combing through long thick hair with that little metal comb trying and trying to get all those pesky little buggers and their eggs. It would take several comb-throughs before I was satisfied. Even after being very meticulous with the treatment they would often have a reinfestation.

My girls would be in tears because those metal combs really hurt!

I can’t tell you how much money I spent on Lice Killing Shampoos. I tried everything I could get my hands on. They smelled nasty and made me wonder how safe they were. I even tried some of the home treatments like the mayonnaise treatment. Yuck! It left their hair so greasy I didn’t think it would ever wash out.

Finally after getting sick and tired of having my hand cramped up from all of the combing and picking I decided to do some research. I found this spray that claimed to be able to repel those little buggers and keep them away. I had to give it a try.

THIS STUFF WORKS!

I was a bit skeptical at first but anything had to be better than what we were doing. I started spraying the kids’ hair before they went to school in the mornings. They didn’t like the smell but it disappeared fairly quickly. The best part was that it seemed to work until it didn’t . That was because I ran out and didn’t buy anymore. Sure enough the kids came home with head lice soon afterwards.

That evening I immediately order some more of this Lice Shield spray and then I saw this LiceFree Treatment so I grabbed a thing of that too. (Lice Shield offers a shampoo as well but I haven’t tried it.)

I was impressed by the fact that it was non toxic and created by a mom who had used those same nasty shampoos I had tried before.  She found a formula that would kill both the eggs and the lice and be gentle enough to use on kids 6 months and older. Another great thing about this treatment is that there is no combing needed! Yep, that’s what I said NO COMBING!

NO COMBING NEEDED!

It is so simple to use. You start with dry hair and start spraying at the nape of the neck. You want to make sure you get the whole head and scalp are saturated well. Then you sit back and let it dry. Once it is dry you are finished! You can wash the hair if you like but it isn’t necessary.

If your school has a ‘No Nit’ policy you may be required to comb through to remove the nits.

As far as I can remember the smell was pretty pleasant as well. Maybe licorice like?

DON’T FORGET THE REST OF THE HOUSE

I do have a couple of bottles of this in the bathroom for emergencies but I haven’t purchased any of these products since 2015 before my kids left public school! I gave away a bottle to a family in need a month or so ago and it took care of the problem right away.

When I had to treat for lice I always liked to use Liceadex bedding spray for the couches and carpets in the house. It has a very pleasant Peppermint smell to it.

We actually had such a problem my kids knew the routine which was similar to this:

  1. Momma treats your hair and everyone else’s hair.
  2. Change clothes, put them in the hamper and take the hamper to the laundry.
  3. Strip down all linens and take them to the laundry room where Momma washes and dries EVERYTHING in the ENTIRE house!
  4. Anything that can’t be thrown in the washer, including the mattresses, carpets, and couches, gets sprayed with Liceadex by Momma.
  5. All of the stuffed animals, pillows, throw pillows, etc are put in the dryer on high for 20 minutes.
  6. A thorough vacuuming is done before replacing linens and such.
  7. I would also use my steamer to steam the carpets as well. That may have been a little bit of overkill but I DESPISE those little buggers.

Just making this post has made my head itch.

If you have children then you definitely DO NOT want to forget to stock up on this! I think I have found it at Walmart before but Amazon offers FREE shipping if you have Amazon PrimeTry Amazon Prime 30-Day Free Trial
