Midweek Update June 12,2018: Allergies, Blueberries, and Cornhole Boards

Quite an assortment of topics for this update. I’m sure I will add in a few others as we go along too.

Allergies

First on the list is the allergies. I try to be preventive and I spray the beds every morning with an essential oil concoction that contains Lavender. This usually helps but I didn’t spray when I made the beds yesterday and the grass was mowed in the afternoon.

I took a trip to the garden after the mowing and now I’m dealing with major allergies. (Last night’s fresh tomato sandwich was so good though.) I love the outdoors but they don’t love me. I seem to also have an allergy to bug bites, especially mosquitoes, after I was attacked by a swarm of mosquitoes last Fall.

Luckily the kids aren’t as bad as I am. Joey gets the sneezes every now and then. I’ve found that the generic Zyrtec helps us both when the Lavender isn’t enough.

Blueberries

Late last night I had a craving for some Blueberry Oatmeal Bread. So early this morning I got up to make a batch, actually a double batch.

After a couple of trips out to the wash shed, one of which I carried a load of laundry — multitasking is my specialty, I finally made it in with the blueberries. I decided to try it with some low-fat Vanilla Greek Yogurt that needed to be used up and it worked out well.

Jacob helped me with measuring and stirring. Then he grabbed a handful of blueberries to ‘decorate’ the tops of the loaves.

I am so glad that we started using the Kids Cook Real Foods program as it has helped me to find ways that the kids can help in the kitchen. This helps to teach them important skills while building bonds.

These will be for snacks and maybe lunch later today.

Cornhole Boards

This may seem kind of random but I promise it’s not. Mr. Awesome had built these fun boards in the past and he had the notion to make some more. That was what our outing to Hobby Lobby, Michael’s, and Lowe’s Hardware was for last week. I really like the way this one turned out.

As you know it has been raining, a lot, here lately. So that means a lot of the work has been done on the porch and in the house. Yep, squeezing more stuff into this itty bitty house as I’ve been working so hard to get rid of stuff the past couple of months. Sighhhh… you just don’t know the struggle.

As a result right now the kids are eating breakfast around the island cart in the kitchen. They aren’t complaining as they love the peanut butter and jelly toast halves with slices of sunshine (oranges). We really need to get to work on the craft area.

Kleaning Missions

As far as any decluttering or major cleaning goes, nothing has happened. I’ve kept up with the basic cleaning schedule but I’m honestly feeling a bit defeated with all the new clutter in the house.

I know it’s a project that means a lot so I’m just dealing with it as best as I can. The other problem is that I’ve ordered things for a major decluttering project that I’ve had on my agenda for awhile. Now the packages have been arriving and the spots I had cleared to store them have been filled.

So we have stacks of boxes here and there and it’s really frustrating for this Momma. I don’t handle clutter and disorganization very well. I do realize that I may be a bit OCD about some things but I’m really trying not to lose my cool.

The FlyLady missions for the week revolve around the Bathroom and an Extra Room. They include the following tasks:

  • Cleaning out the linen closet
  • Putting out 2 Hot Spots
  • Cleaning the Shower
  • Changing the sheets in the guest bedroom
  • Find 10 things to donate from the garage
  • Clean the paper holders and window sills in the bathroom
  • 27 Fling Boogie
  • Wipe down the bathroom counters and sink

Well, I don’t have a linen closet, guest bedroom, or garage so I’ve just tried to find other areas that need a little attention. There are several of these areas right now. I’ve also managed to scrub off most of the art work left by a 5 year old aspiring Van Gogh.

Other News

Hmmmm… now that my rant is over let me see what else we have going on.

We did have a good night on Monday as we went to our regular square dance. We had several visitors and it was a much needed break from the stressful weekend.

I just got a call from the eye doctor to make an appointment for Mr. Joey who is 6. After quickly pulling up my Cozi Calendar I was able to make the appointment for next month. Usually the males in our family have good eyesight where the females have the worst so I’m curious to see how he does.

Then we are still having some ‘tweenager’ difficulties. As no one has come up with a safe, tried, and true method to avoid/deal with this we have been researching and trying out different parenting new techniques. I’ve been through this stage before but what works for one child doesn’t always work for another.

When you couple that fact with the challenges of special needs ADHD/ODD it often feels like I’m fighting a losing battle as what worked today may not, in this case probably won’t, work tomorrow. Parenting is exhausting at times and full of so many unknown obstacles. The joys of parenting are often the rewards from lots of hard and difficult work. I have Faith that this season will pass and I know God can make all things work for the good. I am seriously clinging to that promise right now.

I did buy a DVD, Managing Puberty, Social Challenges: A Video Guide for Girls, from Amazon that I’m hoping will help with some of issues. I will be watching the segments before I show them to the girls so I’ll be able to censor anything that I may not want covered. Educating them about changes and how to handle them is important but protecting their innocence is even more important. (Frugal Tip: Check for ‘used’ items, from higher ranked sellers, as they can be quite a bit cheaper than regular ones.)

As we mention special needs I want to report that William (Down’s Syndrome/ADHD/other) is doing well after his oral surgery last Friday. It was stressful as there were so many things with his condition that could have caused so many complications but God saw us through. This has definitely been an experience that I don’t want to repeat and I am thankful that is almost over. Well, maybe, as he is really getting back to his old self in more ways than one. He was very quiet and complacent for the first couple of days but now he is making up for that. Never a dull moment around here.

Oh, then there’s the upcoming camping trip that everyone is getting really excited about. I’m somewhat excited as I really want to visit my family but nervous as it is a lot of work taking this many kids anywhere. I recently read that parents never really go on vacation, they just look after their kids in a different location. That’s about right but with a every new location comes new experiences and new worries.

Part of my nervousness is coming from the situation with the potential ‘cyber stalker’. (I really don’t like to use that word.) I’ve dealt with stalkers, yes there is an ‘s’ on there, in the past and it’s not fun. I’ve tried to hand it over to God but it keeps popping back up and then the worry/anxiety takes over.

I can tell it is going to be a busy day, as usual, but I know it’s gonna be a great day. The whole house is smelling so delicious right now as the bread is finishing up in the oven. Isabella has already swapped out the load of laundry from this morning so we are a little bit ahead of the game.

She is now in the kitchen washing dishes with the new EcoSense Handwashing Dish Soap we got in the package, from the discount shopping club, earlier this week. I do like the lemony scent but not so much the look of the bottle. Such a petty thing I know but maybe it’ll grow on me? I have plans to do a comparison with this brand and the Mrs. Meyers Lemon Verbana, yes I’m a lemon lover, that I had previously fallen in love with.

I know I’m rambling and there is so much to do but I do want to thank each and everyone of you who read, like, comment, and follow my blog. It really does mean a lot!

Have a blessed day!
