It’s The Day Before Thanksgiving and My House Is A Wreck!

It’s true, our little house on the pond is a wreck and I don’t know where we will put all of our guests that are coming tomorrow. Anybody else feel the same way right now?

The past couple of weeks have been super crazy. I guess everyone has been trying to fit everything in before the holiday season. Then we had the time change which is always so much fun around here… can you hear the sarcasm?

Not too mention that DS15 has been up all night and I’m so tired. He has been wound up since Sunday night’s dinner and has been talking nonstop about anything and everything. I’m just waiting for inevitable crash which usually results in a major meltdown. Fingers crossed it doesn’t happen tomorrow.

I know I talk about routines and cleaning schedules all the time. I stick to them, I really do, but the past week the kids have just been like mini tornadoes sweeping through this little house.

They do clean up after themselves, for the most part, but there are some things they just need to work on. For instance they do put their books back on the proper shelf but they don’t always do it as neatly as I’d like.

And then the toys. While, for the most part they are in the right location they aren’t sorted the way they should be and end up looking way more cluttered than normal.

And then there’s the table which I know is always a Hot Spot for clutter here. It’s the first thing you see when you come in the door. Not to mention that it is right next to our command center and charging station. (This is a new purchase that I haven’t had a chance to tell you about but we absolutely love it.)

As you can see it’s not just the kids that have cluttered this area. I have the camera and tripod from last night’s dance, Mr. Awesome has a computer set up on the end, that stuffed cat needs his tail sewn on again, not to mention the tablets and LEGOs on there. (Those tablets are on Black Friday Deals – Save $40 on Fire HD 8 Kids Edition – was $129.99 – now $89.99. Limited-time offer” target=”_blank” rel=”noopener”>sale right now! The have a newer version Black Friday Deals – Save $40 on Fire HD 8 Kids Edition – was $129.99 – now $89.99. Limited-time offer” target=”_blank” rel=”noopener”>here.)

Plus I have a pile of boxes in front of the computer cabinet which is why some of the stuff, like the tablets, is piled on the table. (Those are projects I need to work on… transforming old graduation gowns into square dance skirts.)

And then there is this ever growing mountain of boxes that need opened.

And these…

I did attempt to open a couple of them over the weekend. We were making a YouTube video… which was a lot more work than I expected. The kids were CRAZY 😜. Hopefully we’ll be posting the edited videos soon for everyone to see.

(I’m really excited to see what’s in there and share it with all of you! There should be everything from kitchen gadgets, cleaning supplies, and toys… plus I have a new printer somewhere in that pile!)

One cluttered area isn’t so bad but when there are several of them in one small space it can be a bit overwhelming. Anyway I’ve come up with a plan of attack. I’m gonna tackle the boxes and the table clutter first thing.

The boxes will probably just be relocated for now. Mr. Awesome has agreed to get the kids out of my hair for a bit on Sunday so I can do some major unboxing. Yay!

We will be working our way through our normal routines and making sure we try to finish up our weekly routines. These include mopping, dusting, and wiping down the furniture. At the most it will take about an hour to clean the main living area, kitchen, and bathroom. That’s a plus to living in a small house.

I will also have the kiddos work on organizing those toy bins and bookshelves to keep them busy for a bit. I may  let them watch A Charlie Brown Thanksgiving as a special treat while I work on getting the casseroles prepped and the bread dough made.

After that is finished we will tidy up the porch a bit as we may need to set some tables up out there if the weather is nice. (Today is absolutely gorgeous!) If the weather’s nice I’ll send the kids out to play this afternoon while I work on desserts like Blueberry Yum Yum and Lemon Meringue Pie. I’m still not sure if we will have a Pumpkin Pie or not as my daughter is bringing a Pumpkin Roll. (I’ll have to find the recipes to post later.)

Sometime today I will should run errands… I know it’s gonna be crazy busy in town but a girl has to do what a girl has to do and I didn’t have a chance to get out yesterday. I need should pick up another turkey as Mr. Awesome has a plan for injecting one before frying. (I’ve never fried a turkey before either but I do have this Butterball turkey fryer that we will be trying out.)

But anyways my whole thing about the house being a wreck is just to say that it really doesn’t matter if your house is cleaned to perfection or not. The food may not be cooked to Pinterest perfect standards and the kids will probably have meltdowns and act out at some time or another.

I am not going to stress out about the toys that have been shoved under the couch or the candy wrappers hiding under the kitchen cart. No matter how clean it is when the guests arrive it’s gonna be a mess when dinner is over. There will be piles of dirty dishes, sticky tables, and floors to sweep. That’s reality.

I’m not going to stress myself to the point of exhaustion because I want to enjoy tomorrow. I want to spend time with my family. Decide what the priorities are and concentrate on those. If the toys and books don’t get straightened, it will be ok. If the boxes don’t get moved, it will be ok. If I don’t get out to get another turkey, that’ll be ok too. We can try out the injection stuff another day. (Who says you can only eat turkey on Thanksgiving?)

The most important thing is to be thankful for what you have. Be thankful for the people you have around you. so sit down, have a cup of coffee, make a plan, take a couple of deep breaths, relax and try to enjoy those moments, make some memories. You can do this!

So from my family to yours we wish you all a very Happy Thanksgiving!
